Tsjuder
Tsjuder is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1993. The group was initially founded by bassist and vocalist Nag and guitarist Berserk, with second guitarist Draugluin joining the following year. After a period of rehearsals and songwriting, the band recorded their first demo tape, titled "Ved Ferdens Ende". Shortly after this release, Berserk left the band and was replaced by drummer Torvus. In 1996, the band released a second demo, "Possessed".
In 1997, Tsjuder experienced further lineup changes. Torvus was dismissed and replaced by Desecrator on drums, while American guitarist Diabolus Mort also joined the band. This lineup recorded the "Throne of the Goat" EP, released by Solistitium Records in 1997. Both Diabolus Mort and Desecrator left the band the following year. Drummer Blod, from Gehenna, and guitarist Arak Draconiiz, from Isvind, then joined. The group recorded a promo titled "Atum Nocturnem", originally intended for rehearsal purposes, but it attracted the attention of several independent labels and was eventually released by At War Records in 1999.
Later in 1999, Tsjuder signed a two-album deal with Drakkar Productions and recorded their debut full-length, "Kill for Satan". Due to time constraints and Blod's unavailability for an upcoming tour in 2000, Christian Svendsen, also known as Anti-Christian, joined as the drummer. After the album’s release, Arak Draconiiz relocated away from Oslo and was replaced by guitarist Pål. In 2001, Svendsen was forced to leave the band due to tendinitis in both arms, and Pål also departed due to work commitments. Svendsen was temporarily replaced by Jontho of Ragnarok. This lineup recorded the band’s second album, "Demonic Possession", released in 2002 by Drakkar Productions. That same year, Norwegian label Mester Productions reissued the "Throne of the Goat" EP as a limited-edition picture disc.
In 2003, Svendsen rejoined the band, replacing Jontho. Tsjuder signed with French label Season of Mist in 2004, and their third studio album, "Desert Northern Hell", was released in November of that year. The band toured Europe with Carpathian Forest in early 2005.
Tsjuder disbanded in 2006 but reformed to perform at Wacken Open Air in August 2011. They resumed touring and released their fourth studio album, "Legion Helvete", in October 2011. A fifth album, "Antiliv", followed in September 2015. As of 2020, the band were reported to be working on a sixth studio album. Drummer Svendsen left the band in June 2020.
Tsjuder’s music is primarily composed by Nag and Draugluin, drawing influence from early black metal bands of the 1980s and 1990s, including Bathory, Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Marduk, and Mayhem, as well as early thrash metal acts such as Destruction, Kreator, Possessed, Sepultura, Slayer, and Sodom.
The band’s lyrics are typically written before the music and explore themes such as darkness, death, evil, hatred, demons, anti-religious sentiment, Satanism, horror films, and the Necronomicon, a fictional book featured in the works of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, whom Nag cites as a major influence.
