Six Feet Under
Six Feet Under is an American death metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed in 1993. The band currently consists of vocalist Chris Barnes, bassist Jeff Hughell, drummer Marco Pitruzzella, and guitarists Ray Suhy and Jack Owen. It was originally formed as a side project by Barnes and guitarist Allen West of Obituary, but became a full-time project after Barnes left Cannibal Corpse in 1995. Six Feet Under has released fourteen studio albums and is recognized by Nielsen SoundScan as one of the best-selling death metal acts in the United States.
After forming, Barnes and West recruited Terry Butler and Greg Gall. Six Feet Under initially performed cover songs in clubs in 1993 and began writing original material in 1994. The band signed to Metal Blade Records as a side project while Barnes was still with Cannibal Corpse. Their first album, "Haunted", was released on September 1, 1995, produced by Brian Slagel and Scott Burns. Around this time, Barnes left Cannibal Corpse, prioritizing Six Feet Under.
The band released the "Alive and Dead" EP on October 29, 1996, containing three studio tracks ("Insect", "Drowning", and a cover of Judas Priest's "Grinder") and four live tracks from "Haunted". Their second studio album, "Warpath", was released on September 9, 1997, incorporating death metal and death n roll elements and marking the final album with Allen West.
In 1998, West returned to Obituary and was replaced by Steve Swanson. This lineup remained stable until 2011. The third studio album, "Maximum Violence", was released on July 13, 1999, and included covers of Kiss's "War Machine", Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild", and Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak". In 2000, Six Feet Under participated in the Vans Warped Tour and released a covers album, "Graveyard Classics", featuring songs by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Jimi Hendrix.
The fourth album, "True Carnage", was released on August 7, 2001, featuring guest performances by Ice-T and Karyn Crisis. The band toured extensively in 2002, recording the live album and DVD "Double Dead Redux". "Bringer of Blood" followed on September 23, 2003, showcasing both guttural and higher-pitched vocals by Barnes.
"Graveyard Classics 2", focused on AC/DC's "Back in Black", was released on October 19, 2004. The sixth studio album, "13", was released on March 21, 2005. Metal Blade Records issued "A Decade in the Grave", a five-disc box set, on October 28, 2005. During this period, Barnes also joined Finnish band Torture Killer, recording on their 2006 album "Swarm!".
The band's seventh studio album, "Commandment", was released on April 17, 2007, followed by extensive touring. "Death Rituals" was released on November 11, 2008, and "Graveyard Classics 3" on January 19, 2010.
In early 2011, Terry Butler and Greg Gall departed. Rob Arnold and Matt Devries joined but Devries later left to join Fear Factory and was replaced by Jeff Hughell. The ninth studio album, "Undead", was released on May 22, 2012, followed by "Unborn" on March 19, 2013. Guitarist Ola Englund and drummer Kevin Talley departed in 2013, with Marco Pitruzzella taking over drums.
The eleventh studio album, "Crypt of the Devil", was released on May 5, 2015, with contributions from members of Cannabis Corpse. "Graveyard Classics IV: The Number of the Priest" was released on May 27, 2016, and Steve Swanson was replaced by Ray Suhy.
The twelfth studio album, "Torment", was released on February 24, 2017, introducing Marco Pitruzzella on drums and Jeff Hughell on guitar and bass. Jack Owen joined the band on February 28, 2017. A digital-only EP, "Unburied", was released on July 6, 2018. "Nightmares of the Decomposed" was released on October 2, 2020, followed by "Killing for Revenge" on May 10, 2024. In early 2025, Six Feet Under co-headlined a US tour with Nile. Their next studio album, "Next to Die", is scheduled for release in April 2026.
