Exodus
1. Exodus is an American thrash metal band formed in 1979 in Richmond, California. The current lineup includes guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus, bassist Jack Gibson, drummer Tom Hunting, and lead vocalist Rob Dukes. Notable former members include vocalists Paul Baloff and Steve "Zetro" Souza, drummers John Tempesta and Paul Bostaph, and founding guitarist Kirk Hammett, who later joined Metallica. Tom Hunting is the only remaining original member, having left the band twice, in 1989 and 2004, before rejoining in 2007. Gary Holt, a member since 1981, is the only musician to appear on all of Exodus' recordings. The band’s history has been shaped by frequent lineup changes, internal conflicts, disputes with record labels, two extended hiatuses, deaths of former members, and struggles with substance abuse.
Exodus has released eleven studio albums, three live albums, one compilation album, and a re-recording of their debut. They gained particular recognition in the mid-to-late 1980s with their first three studio albums: "Bonded by Blood" (1985), "Pleasures of the Flesh" (1987), and "Fabulous Disaster" (1989). The success of "Fabulous Disaster" drew attention from major labels, leading to a deal with Capitol Records, for whom the band released "Impact Is Imminent" (1990) and "Force of Habit" (1992). Following a breakup in 1993 and a brief reunion from 1997 to 1998, Exodus reformed in 2001 and released six additional studio albums, beginning with "Tempo of the Damned" (2004), which played a significant role in the thrash metal revival of the early-to-mid-2000s. Their eleventh studio album, "Persona Non Grata," was released in 2021, and the band is currently working on new material for a 2026 release.
Alongside Metallica, Exodus is recognized as a pioneer of the Bay Area thrash metal scene and is considered part of the region’s so-called "Big Six," along with Testament, Death Angel, Lȧȧz Rockit, Forbidden, and Vio-lence. They have sold over five million albums worldwide and are regarded as one of the "Big Eight" of thrash metal, together with Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Overkill, and Death Angel.
