God Dethroned

God Dethroned is a Dutch death metal band from Beilen. The band was formed in 1990 by vocalist and guitarist Henri Sattler, alongside guitarist Hans Leegstra and drummer Ard de Weerd. Sattler and Leegstra had previously played together in Dysentery. Leegstra left the group shortly after its formation and exited the music scene. The band recorded a demo titled "Christ Hunt" in 1991, after which bassist Marco Arends joined. Their debut album, "The Christhunt", was released on the German label Shark. Arends later left to rejoin Altar and was replaced by Marcel Beukeveld. "The Christhunt" received limited promotion, and its original release was reportedly affected by disagreements over its cover artwork. The band subsequently went on hiatus in 1992, during which Sattler formed Ministry of Terror.

In 1996, after Ministry of Terror had released the album "Fall of Life" in 1994 and toured Europe with Impaled Nazarene, Sattler reformed God Dethroned with guitarist Jens van der Valk, bassist Beef, and drummer Roel Sanders. The group signed with Metal Blade Records and released "The Grand Grimoire" in Europe in 1997, followed by a United States release in 1998 along with a reissue of "The Christhunt". "The Grand Grimoire" achieved greater commercial success than their debut and helped establish the band more widely.

The lineup of Sattler, Van der Valk, Beef and Sanders recorded "Bloody Blasphemy", which was released during a period of increased visibility for the band and was followed by tours with acts such as Marduk, Immortal, and Deicide. After the album cycle, Sanders left and was replaced by drummer Tony Laureano, who remained until 2003. Laureano appeared on the 2001 album "Ravenous" before leaving to join Nile.

Drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek then joined the band, and they recorded "Into the Lungs of Hell" in 2002. During this period, creative differences emerged regarding the band’s musical direction and lyrical themes. Following the album’s release and touring cycle, both Beef and Jens van der Valk left the group. Bassist Henk Zinger and guitarist Isaac Delahaye were recruited, completing the lineup for the 2004 album "The Lair of the White Worm".

The band later worked with producer Rick Rubin on "The Toxic Touch", released in 2006.

In 2008, further lineup changes occurred. Van Weesenbeek left after joining Epica full-time and was replaced by former drummer Roel Sanders. After the recording of "Passiondale", released in 2009, the band added guitarist Susan Gerl. Sanders departed shortly after the album’s release and was replaced by Michiel van der Plicht. "Passiondale" is a concept album based on the Battle of Passchendaele during World War I.

In 2010, Sattler announced work on a new album and touring plans in support of Overkill. Guitarist Danny Tunker later joined the band. The album "Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross" was released on 22 November 2010 through Metal Blade Records and received positive reviews, also becoming the band’s first release to be named Album of the Month by Aardschok magazine in the Netherlands.

Sattler announced in 2011 that the band would conclude activities, with final performances planned for December. They performed at the 70000 Tons of Metal festival in January 2012 before disbanding.

The band reunited in 2015, performing at the 70000 Tons of Metal festival and undertaking additional live shows. They subsequently continued performing and released "The World Ablaze" in 2017, the third album in a World War I-themed trilogy. The album charted in several metal rankings. With lead guitarist Mike Ferguson and bassist Jeroen Pomper, God Dethroned released "Illuminati" on 7 February 2020.

Their most recent album, "The Judas Paradox", was released on 6 September 2024.
