In Flames
In Flames is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1990 in Gothenburg. The band is regarded as one of the pioneering acts of the Gothenburg metal scene, alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. The lineup has undergone numerous changes, with vocalist Anders Fridén and guitarist Björn Gelotte being the only members to have remained continuously since 1995. Following the departure of founding member Jesper Strömblad in 2010, no original members have remained in the band. In Flames has sold more than two million records worldwide.
During its early years, In Flames recorded with a number of session musicians. The band’s debut album, "Lunar Strain" (1994), featured guest vocalist Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity and several additional contributors. The 1995 EP "Subterranean" led to a record deal with Nuclear Blast. In 1996, the band released "The Jester Race," followed by "Whoracle" in 1997, further establishing its melodic death metal sound. After lineup changes, including the recruitment of Peter Iwers and a shift in Gelotte’s role from drums to guitar, the band released "Colony" in 1999 and "Clayman" in 2000. The live album "The Tokyo Showdown" followed in 2001.
With the release of "Reroute to Remain" in 2002, In Flames adopted a stylistic shift incorporating clean vocals and alternative metal elements. The album marked a departure from the band’s earlier sound and expanded its mainstream audience. Subsequent albums included "Soundtrack to Your Escape" (2004), which increased the band’s international visibility, and "Come Clarity" (2006), which became their first number-one album in Sweden. "A Sense of Purpose" was released in 2008. During this period, the band toured internationally and participated in major festivals and tours, including Gigantour and Ozzfest.
Jesper Strömblad left the band in 2010. In Flames continued with "Sounds of a Playground Fading" (2011), followed by "Siren Charms" (2014) and "Battles" (2016). These releases further explored alternative metal influences and featured additional lineup changes, including new drummers and bassists. In 2019, the band released "I, the Mask." A 20th anniversary edition of "Clayman" was issued in 2020. Former members later formed the band The Halo Effect.
In 2023, In Flames released their fourteenth studio album, "Foregone," which some reviewers described as combining elements of the band’s earlier melodic death metal style with their later alternative metal approach. In subsequent years, the band continued touring and recording, with additional lineup adjustments, including changes in the rhythm section.
Musically, In Flames is characterized by harmonized guitar melodies, a combination of screamed, growled, and clean vocals, and the incorporation of keyboards and synthesizers. Early releases such as "The Jester Race" and "Whoracle" focused lyrically on themes including astrology and broader existential topics, while later albums addressed more personal and introspective subjects. The stylistic evolution initiated with "Reroute to Remain" divided parts of the fan base but contributed to broader commercial recognition. In Flames remains one of the most prominent bands associated with the development and international dissemination of melodic death metal.
