Dark Fortress

Dark Fortress was a German melodic black metal band formed in 1994 in Landshut, Germany. The band released seven studio albums, one split release, and one demo before disbanding in 2023.

The band was founded in 1994. In 1996, Dark Fortress released the demo "Rebirth of the Dark Age". In 1997, the original lineup consisted of guitarist Asvargr, vocalist Azathoth, bassist Njord, and drummer Charon. The group later expanded with the addition of guitarist Crom and keyboardist Thamuz for live performances. Dark Fortress made its live debut in February 1997 and subsequently performed with bands including Lunar Aurora, Disaster, and Naglfar.

The band's first label release was the split mini-CD "Towards Immortality", released in collaboration with Barad Dür through Fog of the Apocalypse Records. The release featured two new songs by Dark Fortress. An additional track recorded during the same sessions later appeared on the compilation album "From The Mystic Forest - Part II". Work on the band's debut full-length album continued throughout the late 1990s, although recording sessions were postponed until August 2000. The album "Tales From Eternal Dusk" was eventually recorded at Klangschmiede Studio E with producer Markus Stock of Empyrium.

Dark Fortress recorded its second studio album, "Profane Genocidal Creations", at Grieghallen Studio in Norway. The album was released in February 2003 after delays during the mixing and mastering process. At the time, the lineup consisted of Azathoth on vocals, Asvargr and Santura on guitars, Draug on bass, Paymon on keyboards, and Seraph on drums. The band subsequently performed at concerts and festivals alongside acts including Behemoth, Impaled Nazarene, Pungent Stench, and God Dethroned.

In 2004, Dark Fortress released the album "Stab Wounds" through Black Attakk. The album featured artwork by Travis Smith, who had previously worked with bands such as Opeth, Nevermore, Anathema, and Death. The release combined melodic elements with lyrical themes centered on melancholy and death. Limited editions of the album included a cover version of Katatonia's "Endtime", while the double-LP edition released by Imperium Records in 2005 featured a cover of Emperor's "I Am The Black Wizards".

On 13 May 2007, vocalist Azathoth left the band and was replaced by Morean. Dark Fortress later released the album "Séance", which again featured artwork by Travis Smith. The album was conceived as a concept work addressing themes including mortality, human weakness, and paranormal phenomena.

On 29 January 2010, the band released an official music video for the song "Hirudineans", taken from the album "Ylem". Dark Fortress subsequently released two additional studio albums before announcing its disbandment on 15 May 2023 through its official Facebook page.
