Fleshcrawl

Fleshcrawl is a German death metal band formed in Illertissen, Bavaria, in 1987. The band was founded by Stefan Hanus and Bastian Herzog under the name Morgöth. Since its formation, Fleshcrawl has undergone several line-up changes and has released a number of studio albums. Their most recent album, "Into the Catacombs of Flesh", was released in 2019 through Apostasy Records.

The band was originally formed as Morgöth in 1987. In 1990, following the departure of original vocalist Wendelin Dopfer, Alex Pretzer joined as lead vocalist. The band subsequently changed its name to Suffocation and released the demo tape "Festering Flesh". After discovering that the American death metal band Suffocation had already released material under that name, the group adopted the name Fleshcrawl. In 1991, Fleshcrawl released the EP "Lost in a Grave" through Morbid Records and began performing live under the new name.

In 1992, Fleshcrawl signed with Black Mark Production and recorded its debut studio album, "Descend into the Absurd", at Montezuma Studios in Stockholm. Following the album's release, Mike Hanus replaced guitarist Gero Schmitt. In 1993, the band recorded its second album, "Impurity", at Unisound Studio under the direction of Dan Swanö.

During the mid-1990s, line-up changes continued. Markus Amann left the band in 1995, and Mike Hanus assumed bass duties in the studio. The third album, "Bloodsoul", was recorded in late 1995 and released in 1996. The following year, Fleshcrawl released its fourth album, "Bloodred Massacre", featuring Sven Gross as the new lead vocalist. Both albums were recorded at Abyss Studios and produced by Peter Tägtgren.

In 1998, Tobias Schick joined as bassist, allowing Mike Hanus to return to guitar full-time. After leaving Black Mark Production, Fleshcrawl toured with bands including Kataklysm and Vader and appeared at festivals alongside groups such as Cannibal Corpse and Dark Funeral. The band subsequently signed with Metal Blade Records and released its fifth studio album, "As Blood Rains from the Sky... We Walk the Path of Endless Fire", in January 2000. The album was recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg. Fleshcrawl supported the release with European touring and festival appearances.

The sixth studio album, "Soulskinner", was recorded in 2001 at Studio Underground in Västerås, Sweden, and released in 2002. The band promoted the album with a European tour alongside Bolt Thrower and Benediction. In the same year, founding member Stefan Hanus left for personal reasons and was replaced by Oliver Grbavac. Fleshcrawl also performed at Wacken Open Air and completed its first tour of Japan as support for Hypocrisy.

In 2003, the band concentrated on writing new material and recorded its seventh studio album, "Made of Flesh". Released in 2004, the album continued the musical direction established on "Soulskinner". Fleshcrawl supported the release with festival appearances and a European tour with Six Feet Under and Criminal.

A compilation album, "Crawling in Flesh - The Best of Fleshcrawl", was released in 2005 and featured material from the band's first four studio albums.

In 2007, bassist Tobias Schick was replaced by Nico Scheffler. Later that year, Fleshcrawl released its eighth studio album, "Structures of Death". The band promoted the album through live performances across Central Europe and appearances at several metal festivals.

In 2011, Manuel Markowski replaced Nico Scheffler on bass. Although Fleshcrawl did not release a new studio album between 2007 and 2019, the band remained active as a live act, appearing at numerous festivals and concerts throughout Europe, as well as performing in Dubai in 2012. In 2015, Fleshcrawl collaborated with Skinned Alive on a split release featuring four new songs. In 2016, the band undertook its first Asian tour, performing in seven countries. That year also saw the release of "Festering Thoughts from a Grave", a collection of the band's early demos and the "Lost in a Grave" EP.

Between 2017 and 2019, Fleshcrawl continued to perform at festivals across Europe. In 2018, longtime guitarist Mike Hanus left the band and was replaced by Slobodan Stupar. In 2019, the band made its first appearance in North America at the Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore, Maryland.

Later in 2019, Fleshcrawl released "Into the Catacombs of Flesh", its first full-length studio album in twelve years. The album was issued by Apostasy Records. Further line-up changes followed, with Christian Kalbrecht replacing Slobodan Stupar in 2020 and Apu Justin Reisch joining later that year after the departure of Oliver Grbavac.

On 11 June 2021, vocalist Sven Gross died from cancer at the age of 44. Later that year, Russian-born singer Borisz Sarafutgyinov performed with the band and was officially announced as Fleshcrawl's new vocalist on 15 October 2021. Since then, he has served as the band's frontman.
