Zebrahead
Zebrahead is an American rock band from La Habra, California, formed in 1996. Their music combines elements of pop punk and hip hop. The band’s current line-up consists of rapper Ali Tabatabaee, bassist Ben Osmundson, drummer Ed Udhus, lead guitarist Dan Palmer and lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Adrian Estrella. The band has released thirteen studio albums.
Zebrahead was formed in 1996 by Tabatabaee, Osmundson, Udhus, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Justin Mauriello and guitarist Greg Bergdorf. The group developed a style that incorporated hip hop influences alongside punk rock, leading to the dual vocal approach of rapping and singing. Their first recorded material included the demo "One More Hit", featuring the song "Check". In 1998, they released their self-titled debut album through Doctor Dream Records, followed by their major label debut "Waste of Mind" later that year. The album included the single "Get Back", which charted on the U.S. Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, and a version of "Check" that appeared on the soundtrack of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3".
The band’s third studio album, "Playmate of the Year", was released in 2000 and charted on the U.S. Top Heatseekers chart. An EP, "Stupid Fat Americans", followed in 2001. In 2003, Zebrahead released "MFZB", which marked a shift towards a heavier punk rock sound. The album achieved commercial success in Japan, where it was certified gold. A companion release, "Waste of MFZB", consisting of additional material, was issued in Japan in 2004.
In 2004, Justin Mauriello left the band and was replaced in 2005 by Matty Lewis, who made his debut on "Broadcast to the World" in 2006. The band toured internationally, including appearances on the Warped Tour and Download Festival. During this period, Tabatabaee and Lewis also performed the song "His World" for the video game "Sonic the Hedgehog" (2006). The album "Phoenix" followed in 2008, preceded by the EP "Not the New Album". In 2009, Zebrahead released the cover album "Panty Raid", featuring songs originally performed by female artists. Their ninth studio album, "Get Nice!", was released in 2011 and charted on the U.S. Top Heatseekers chart.
In 2013, Zebrahead released "Call Your Friends". Around the same time, Greg Bergdorf left the band and was replaced by Dan Palmer. The band continued touring internationally and released the live DVD "Way More Beer" in 2014. To mark their twentieth anniversary, they released the compilation "Greatest Hits? – Volume 1" in 2015, followed by "The Early Years - Revisited", which featured re-recorded versions of earlier songs. Later that year, the band released "Walk the Plank" and continued touring in Europe and Japan.
In 2017, Zebrahead released the compilation "The Bonus Brothers", featuring tracks previously exclusive to Japanese editions of their albums. Their thirteenth studio album, "Brain Invaders", was released in 2019.
In 2021, Matty Lewis left the band and was replaced by Adrian Estrella. The band released the single "Lay Me to Rest" later that year, followed by the EP "III" in 2021. Subsequent EPs, "II" and "I", were released in 2023 and 2024 respectively, marking a new phase in the band’s career with Estrella as co-lead vocalist.
