Carpathian Forest
Carpathian Forest is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1992 by Nattefrost and Nordavind. The band is known for a style often described as black 'n' roll, featuring a distinctive bass tone and lyrics addressing themes such as BDSM, perversion, misanthropy, death, and suicide.
The band originally began in late 1990 under the name Enthrone, founded by Nattefrost, then using the pseudonym Lord Nosferatu, and Nordavind, known as Lord Karnstein. They self-released a demo tape titled "Black Winds" in 1991. In 1992, Enthrone changed its name to Carpathian Forest, with Lord Blackmangler and Damnatus joining the lineup. As a quartet, they self-released three demo tapes: "Rehearsal Outtake", "Bloodlust and Perversion" (both in 1992), and "Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern" (1993). Following the departure of Damnatus and Lord Blackmangler, the band returned to being a duo.
Carpathian Forest released their first studio work in 1995, the extended play "Through Chasm, Caves and Titan Woods", through Avantgarde Music, which would remain their label for several releases. Their debut full-length album, "Black Shining Leather", was released in 1998 and featured Lazare on drums, who later joined Borknagar. That year, the band performed their first concert at the Under the Black Sun Festival in Germany.
In 1999, Lazare left the band, and Anders Kobro, Tchort, and Daniel Vrangsinn joined as permanent members. Their second full-length album, "Strange Old Brew", was released in 2000 and marked a more experimental approach. Later that year, they released the single "He's Turning Blue".
Founding member Nordavind left in 2001 during the recording of the third album, "Morbid Fascination of Death", which maintained some experimental elements from the previous release. In 2002, the compilation album "We're Going to Hell for This: Over a Decade of Perversions" was issued to mark the band's tenth anniversary. This was their last release with Avantgarde Music before moving to Season of Mist.
Their fourth album, "Defending the Throne of Evil", was released in 2003 by Season of Mist and featured a more melodic style, with some symphonic black metal influences. Later that year, Gøran "Blood Pervertor" Bomann joined the band.
In 2004, Carpathian Forest released a live DVD titled "We're Going to Hollywood for This", along with a compilation album of rarities and reworked songs called "Skjend hans lik". Their most recent studio album, "Fuck You All!!!! Caput tuum in ano est", was released in 2006 and returned to a raw, blackened thrash metal sound reminiscent of their early work.
In 2008, band member Tchort discussed plans for a new album and addressed rumours of a half-finished release, clarifying that although some material remained from the previous album, no new writing had begun. The band co-headlined the Inferno Festival in 2009 and confirmed work on a new album.
After 2009, the band entered a period of relative inactivity but resumed performing at festivals in Europe from 2012 onwards. They were scheduled to play at Maryland Deathfest in 2013 but cancelled due to visa issues. Their last known performance took place at Incineration Fest in London in May 2019.
During concerts in 2013 and 2014, Jonathan Perez, known from Green Carnation and formerly with Sirenia and Trail of Tears, performed as their live drummer.
Carpathian Forest went on hiatus in July 2014 after Tchort and Blood Pervertor left to form a new band called The 3rd Attempt. The band returned in 2017 and announced work on a new album titled "Likskue", planned for release in 2018.
