Naglfar

Naglfar is a Swedish melodic black metal band formed in 1992. The group was initially established under the name Uninterred by Jens Rydén (vocals, guitar) and Kristoffer Olivius (bass).

The band formed in 1992 and completed its early line-up when Ulf Andersson of Nocturnal Rites joined on drums, with Morgan Hansson and Fredrik Degerström added on guitars. This allowed Rydén to focus solely on vocals. In March 1994, Degerström left the band due to personal issues and musical differences, followed shortly afterwards by Andersson, who returned to focus on Nocturnal Rites. During this period, the band recorded their first demo at Garageland Studio, titled "Stellae Trajectio", which was released in November 1994. Prior to its release, the group changed its name to Naglfar, after a ship in Norse mythology said to be constructed from the nails of the dead.

In early 1995, Naglfar signed with Wrong Again Records. That summer they released their debut album, "Vittra", featuring drummer Mattias Holmgren. Holmgren left the band after the recording. Following this period, the band had limited activity aside from contributing to an Iron Maiden tribute release with a cover of "The Evil That Men Do". Their second album, "Diabolical", was released in 1998 with Mattias Grahn on drums. CMJ New Music Report described it as a "ferocious version of Swedish black/death metal... monumentally mind-blowing".

Naglfar signed with Century Media in 2002. After further line-up changes and a European tour with Deicide, the band recorded the EP "Ex Inferis", which drew comparisons to Dimmu Borgir, followed by the album "Sheol". The New York Times described the band as "one of the most compelling metal bands" and also "one of the most ridiculous", with their music described as "terrific". After the release of "Sheol", Jens Rydén left the band, with Kristoffer Olivius taking over lead vocal duties. Rydén later recorded under the name Profundi, releasing the album "The Omega Rising" in 2006.

In 2005, Naglfar released the album "Pariah", which AllMusic noted for its "shockingly profane lyrics". The album was followed by a European tour with Dark Funeral and several festival appearances. In December 2005, touring bassist Peter Morgan Lie became the band's permanent bass player. For their 2007 album "Harvest", Naglfar collaborated with director Roger Johansson on a video for the track "The Darkest Road". The band also toured the United States in 2007.

In August 2009, Naglfar announced via Myspace that they were beginning work on a new album, without a stated release date. In December 2011, they launched an official Facebook page. On 22 December 2011, the album "Téras" was announced and released in March 2012, featuring session drummer Dirk Verbeuren. In 2013, Naglfar performed at Wacken Open Air.

The band began writing their seventh album in February 2014. In 2020, they confirmed it would be titled "Cerecloth", which was released on 8 May through Century Media.
